Update on reports

Just a quick update folks.Model making and Photography are a bit slow at present. This is mainly due to both my wife and i not being to well at present. As a result Part 2 of my BT42 build has had to take a bit of a back seat at the moment.I would rather take my time and do things right.I have made a couple of mistakes thus far and i think this was a result of not  feeling to good.Things should be back to normal within the next fortnight.

Many thanks Jim.

Tamiya BT-42 Finnish Assault Gun Build Part 1

                                                                  FINNISH BT-42
My next project in my ever increasing model stash is the BT42 by Tamiya in 1/35th scale.Below i will show you how i built this assault gun.I have decided to do this in two parts,as there is alot of information to share with you.So lets get to it.

HISTORY
The BT-42 was the result of the joining of the BT7 to a new modified turret. This was the WW1 4.5 inch howitzer MkII,modified with a muzzle brake and increased firing range. Not maybe the best of ideas, but in the situation Finland found themselves in WW2 was the best solution.

Entering service early 1943 eighteen were produced and fought untill 1944.Sadly not up to the task they were put into storage untill 1957.Only one remains now at the Parola Armour Museum in Finland.

THE MODEL
So enter Tamiya in 2011 with the 1/35th version. When i heard about this kit i had to have one.I am always on the lookout for the wierd and wonderfull. This kit certainly fits that bill, with its huge turret.I reckon you could have a party in there,Vodka anyone.

I was very lucky when i purchased this kit,as the retail price in the UK is £43-50.I however got mine from EBay for £28 inc p and p.

THE BUILD
So onto the build. What you get for your money is a box packed with sprues, with many parts you do not use as these are taken directly from the BT7.Seperate tracks which come in sections which is nice. And a nice etch grill which is a very welcome addition.Examining the various larger parts,i found that the plastic seems very soft. This was to catch me out a few times later in the build,as i tend to have a ham fisted approach at times.

This build dictates to me that you follow the instructions to the letter mostly. Here are some pictures of the frames.

Lots of plastic for your money as you can see.

Stage 1
Stage 1 starts with the construction of the hull.Unlike your normal way Tamiya do things i.e one piece hull, this model is built using a box construction.Although Tamiya having taken great care here to make sure everything aligns.I would use caution and take your time to ensure everything lines up just so.I tend to use a set square and ruler and check the angles. Also i will say the plastic is soft.I know i am repeating myself, but this model is not cheap. The images are below for you to see and X refer to.

Stages 2 and 3 follow the same procedure as stage 1.

We now move on to Stage 4 the suspension is easy enough, but make sure you know your left from your right B3 right and B4 left.

Stage 5

Torsion arms and suspension on.Test fit everything here. Its a great fit if done with care.Once done flip the hull over and lay on a flat surface and 'Hey Presto'.

Stage 6

This is where the fun starts.I would suggest at this stage referring to the colour images that come with the kit.The side body panels are basically slabs of metal, bolted and welded onto the sub frame.Tamiya have engineered these very well.So do not worry if there is a slight gap ok.

Stage 7
This is very straight forward.Just make sure again everything is straight.

Stage 8
This stage was a little fiddly for me having big hands. So after attempt number one and a few choice words,i went away and had a cup of tea or was it a brandy. And back for another go this time i used twizzers for parts A25 and A9.The trick here is to align the holes bang on.The saying more speed less haste comes to mind.

Stage 9 and 10
Oh no wheels and wheels and wheels. Why does nobody like wheels.Just watch where part A15 goes. And thats it easy.

Stage 11
I skipped this at this point. But if you choose, then do follow the instructions.

Stage 12
Exhaust covers. Please take your time here and follow things to the letter.I was amazed at the outcome. The only thing i would say is be carefull of the tabs on the etch part.Do not fiddle to much as these will break.

Stage 13

More etch.I had problems here lining everything up.But when i looked at the real thing on the images it appears not to bad. This is due to severe battering of these areas in the heat of battle.

Stage 14 and 15

The hull cover and exhausts part A33  must be secured to B7 strongly.I say this as i did not not do this and the exhausts were a tad wobbly.Soon solved with super glue and activator. At this time choose which mark you are doing as the tools fit is different.I myself chose C with a twist,as things never get put back in the right place.

Stage 16,17,18

Straight forward here.Just choose at Stage 17 which boxes are going on.

Stage 19

The fenders are alot easier than you imagine. Please refer to images first here.Dry fit the parts first.Once cemented and on the main hull, they have an angle. This is meant to be so.

Stage 20 and 21

Staight forward again.Although i myself will replace the cable with a steel one or copper one.

Ok thats Part 1 of the build done.I have flashed a primer over the hull to check for parts fit and only used a very small amount of filler on the back end.Mainly to make a weld joint appear as on the real hull.

Part2

Part2 will i hope appear this weekend, providing the good wife recovers from flu.

IPMS UK SCALE MODEL WORLD 2011 TELFORD

                                                         SCALE MODEL WORLD 2011

Its 05.45 am Saturday 12th of November, as i am woken by the warbling alarm on my mobile phone. Its time to get up for Scale Model World or what we oldies call "The Nationals".This year is my 18th visit, but i always get excited the night before and never sleep well.

Leaving Birmingham at around 07.00 the goodly wife and i made our way via the M54 and arrived just before 8 am.This year we did not experience any problems parking and were allocated a nice space in the disabled area.It was then straight in to be honest, which was nice.I did however here a couple of members had problems as they were diverted to the overflow carpark even before the main was put in use.Reverse logic maybe, but not for me to comment on further i think.

Entering Hall 3 first,you were greeted by the competition area resplendid in the bright deep pink cloths. There were a few entries on the tables, but there were many nice additions to come.

For me this year i had drooled over the Zoukei-Mura Skyraider in 1/32 and i was biting at the bit to get my hands on mine that i had pre- ordered. So it was a quick walk into Hall 2.The queue had already started awaiting the staff from Zoukei-Mura.With the normal Japanese precision they turned up on time and proceeded to sell the pre-ordered items. The Skyraiders were all packaged with names of the lucky 12,that had pre-ordered.So the worst bit arrived parting with £100.Having consulted with the boss aka the wife,i gave my pennies away.At this juncture i would like to say that the manner in which i was served was exemplary. Our UK traders could learn alot from them and thats not a dig, more an observation of the importance of the customer to their products.Having purchased my Skyraider i was now on a morale high and i decided to have a chat with the guys of Zoukei-Mura.They have an ethic of listening to what the customer wants and this was reflected in them having a board upon which you could write down your wishes. For me it was a Starfighter ASA version.I am sure one with a nice cockpit would be nice.

Ok i have gone on a bit above,so its on with the rest.Once in Hall 2 it is very easy to get distracted from your plan. And yes i did have one this year for those that know me.My next stop was Wonderland.Lots of goodies here.Hasegawa 1/32 F-16's at very cheap prices.Well done Wonderland for this and other discounts. It was then off to see my good mate Phil Mitchell of Mainly Military.Phil had some great armour discounts this year.I purchased a 1/35th Vulcan Models Vickers Tank for £23 and a Hobbyboss Wolf  Landrover for £18.99 bargains i thought.Accurate Armour was next for a gun barrel. It was here i saw a Dutch chap part with £500,so i guess Accurate Armour were doing well.Lastly on my first walk about was Airfix. There are some very nice 1/48th Lynx and a Merlin coming from them. The Merlin looks very nice indeed and is slated for the first quarter of 2012.I wait with slight caution though,as i would of thought the Lynx would have been out by now.Time for tea at this point.

Having refreshed myself it was round two.Check out the club stands. Some great efforts this year by the likes of my old club Stafford that i attended before moving to Birmingham.Their theme was "La France".The other club was Early Risers.I have followed their progression closely. And this year they surpassed themselves with a winter theme.Sheer class are the words i would use to describe the set up,well done.

At this point i will fast forward to Sunday as more happened this day for me in regards to net working. My first port of call was to Sprue Mart. This company is run by Clive Jefferies.Clive told me he looks for the hard to find products for the model maker and this was evident in his display of said products.I myself purchased a JLC Saw for £11.18 with discount.Clive is a real nice polite chap and i recommend him highly. www.spruemart.co.uk is his website.+44(0)7593 299 323 Tel.Next stop Heritage Aviation Models Ltd.Ohh err Mrs i could of had a field day.www.heritageaviationmodelsltd.com is their web site.I purchased a Wessex set from them for £20.It was whilst talking  i found out that the company is run by an ex RAF chap like myself so we pulled up several sand bags and it was a conversation of "when i was here".This lead onto the adjacent trader being called over and so ensued many ex RAF Suppliers having a reunion of sorts. The said adjacent trader was Gard Ford of Tiger Models.Gary imports Diescast Military Models at great prices.I urge you to check him out at http://www.tiger-hobbies.co.uk/ Gary and his team have a great logistical ethic. And i am sure he can help you in your search for your wants. And again it was time for tea and dinner.

Tea drunk, i thought ahhhh  dinner. And so it was off to practice my Italian and French at the Overseas Area. Each year as far as i can remember foreign clubs bring some nice food and Vino for us to consume.Parma ham, wine and cheese was for me.Yum Yum cheers, merci, gratsi mille.

It was getting on now and time for pics for me to share with you.Lots of 1/32 Hawks this year. This years collection is below for you to see. Before i left i had a quick chat with Gary Madgwick of what was Model Alliance.Wait and see is all i am going to say.But you will be very happy in 2012.

At 4pm it was all over for another year.I really enjoyed myself this year and it was an honour to meet up with mi old service buddies and have a yarn.Only a year to number 19.Next show will be Bolton where i will be with 580 Modellers.Come and have a chat.
